Poem "The Sorry State of Public Education"

The Sorry State of Public Education

By Richard H. Fay

“School is an institutional lie!”
Exclaims a nonconformist student
Shoved hard into the conformist mold
Of a wrecked societal construct
Propped up by a decaying system.

“Failing educators teach nothing!”
Proclaims a disappointed parent
Witnessing young minds yearning to learn
Denied academic essentials
By a broken-down bureaucracy.

“I am no longer allowed to teach!”
Explains an overworked teacher
Overburdened with an outsized class
Filled with disrespectful delinquents
Expecting to pass, fair grades or poor.

“Our hands are tied by a lack of funds!”
Bemoans a dysfunctional school board.
Incompetent administrators
Misspend municipal tax dollars
Leaving instructors to go without.

“Uninformed parents don’t understand!”
Cries a clueless superintendent
Deaf to the legitimate complaints,
Blind to the great mediocrities
Built into the flawed institution:
“Those who can, do;
Those who can’t, teach.”
